- AI in the drafting seat. Scene beats keep you, in their words, in the director's seat, telling the AI what should happen next, and Workshop Chat (Artisan and up) brainstorms beside your scene.
- Your choice of model. Bring your own key from the Hobbyist plan up: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Mistral, OpenRouter (300+ models) or local models via LM Studio and Ollama.
- Prices you can read today. Plans from $4 to $20 a month, a 21-day trial with all features unlocked, and import from Word, Markdown or HTML.
- Collaboration while drafting. Invite friends, proofreaders and editors into your novels, and create and manage teams on the Specialist plan.
- An established community. Their home page counts a community of 220k+ authors, alongside free courses, a blog and a Discord.
Where Kanonara is the better choice
- Continuity as the core. Story Doctor holds each analysed chapter against your recorded canon: character contradictions, timeline conflicts, item continuity, character knowledge and world rules, with every finding citing its evidence.
- A bible that keeps its history. Character states are dated, so the Story Bible can answer what a character knew, or where they were, at any earlier chapter.
- The author is the source of truth. AI findings arrive as proposals you accept or reject; canon never changes silently.
- Serials published where they are written. Scheduled chapter releases go to a public library with reader accounts, comments, reactions, per-chapter analytics and follow emails.
- Fixed A6 book pages, end to end. The page you edit is the page readers read, and your manuscript exports as Markdown with a full backup file, any time.
The bottom line
Both tools put a story bible at the center; they point it at different problems. Novelcrafter's Codex is a world-building wiki that supplies context to AI you bring yourself, inside a mature writing workspace with published prices. Kanonara's Story Bible feeds a continuity checker and a publishing path: every analysed chapter is held against the recorded canon, and the same fixed pages carry the story from the editor to readers.
