Biopunk
Speculative fiction derived from cyberpunk that centers on biotechnology: genetic engineering, bio-hackers and biotech megacorporations.
Biopunk (a portmanteau of biotechnology or biology and punk) is a subgenre of science fiction that focuses on biotechnology, derived from cyberpunk but trading cyberware and information technology for the implications of synthetic biology. Its recurring cast includes bio-hackers, biotech megacorporations and oppressive organizations that engineer DNA, and a common feature is the "black clinic", a facility performing illegal, unregulated or ethically dubious biological modification and genetic engineering. Paul Di Filippo is the prominent writer here, though he called his collection of such stories ribofunk (a blend of ribosome and funk), and the named shelf runs from H. G. Wells's The Island of Doctor Moreau through Greg Bear's Blood Music and Sterling's Schismatrix.
For writers it is cyberpunk with the chrome swapped for DNA: the genre runs on the risks and downsides of genetic engineering, so modifications are grown, injected or inherited rather than installed, and a long serial must track who was altered, how, and by whom.
