The cozy mystery is a near-formulaic branch of the genre: no on-page violence, gore, sex or swearing; an amateur civilian sleuth with access to the community; fair-play clueing; and an enclosed community setting. The comfort is the contract.
Cozies run long as series, which makes series-level continuity (recurring townsfolk, prior cases, the detective's relationships) part of the genre's economics. See also fair-play mystery.
