Grimdark is a fantasy register marked by dystopian, amoral and violent tone, with realism and psychology replacing idealism and ideology. One caveat worth keeping: genre discussion explicitly frames it as leaving room for "different voices, different approaches", so guaranteed misery or guaranteed no-victory is one reading of the tone, not a defining requirement.
Tone is a strong expectation rather than an enforceable rule, which is exactly the distinction a story bible records when noting genre conventions.
