Narrator

A narrator is the voice that tells the story. Wikipedia's article on narration defines narration as "the use of a written or spoken commentary to convey a story to an audience," then adds that it is "conveyed by a narrator: a specific person, or unspecified literary voice, developed by the creator of the story," the party who delivers information about the plot to the reader. The narrator may be anonymous, may be a character inside the story, and may take part in the events or stand apart from them; narration is required in every written story.

The distinction that organizes everything downstream is narrator versus author: the voice on the page is a construct, not the person writing it. Who that construct is, how much it knows and how close it stands to the action is the point of view decision, mapped in choosing point of view. Its named extremes are the omniscient narrator and the unreliable narrator.
