Paranormal romance
A subgenre of both romantic fiction and speculative fiction, pairing romantic love with vampires, shapeshifters, ghosts and other otherworldly beings.
Paranormal romance is a subgenre of both romantic fiction and speculative fiction, defined by romantic love stories that involve "entities of a fantastic or otherworldly nature": vampires, shapeshifters, ghosts, werewolves, witches, psychics, and time-travel, futuristic or extraterrestrial settings. The genre grew fast after 2000, with United States publications doubling to 170 per year between 2002 and 2004, and Stephenie Meyer's Twilight is its standard-bearer example.
For novel and web-serial writers it is the direct ancestor shelf of romantasy, and its supernatural casts play by urban fantasy's rules: what each being can do, and which humans know it exists, is canon the whole series must keep. The romance engine underneath is the one mapped in how to write romance.
