Its signature device is the meet-cute, a humorous or unexpected first encounter that sets up the romance, and it typically ends happily while avoiding serious satire. The form descends from ancient Greek comedy through Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream to modern film.
For novel and web-serial writers, romcom is contract writing: the happy ending is expected the way romance at large expects HEA/HFN, and beat frameworks such as Romancing the Beat exist to pace the jokes and the feelings together.
