Seinen manga is an editorial category of Japanese comics marketed toward young adult men. The word seinen means "youth", but in practice it marks magazines aimed at adult men, roughly 18 to 30 years old and often older. It covers the same genres as shonen, from action, romance, comedy and crime to slice of life, but its works tend to feature darker or otherwise more mature story lines, and harem stories are noted as especially popular in the category. By the 1990s seinen accounted for about a third of all manga output, carried by magazines such as Big Comic, Weekly Young Jump and Morning.
The craft takeaway is a content-rating distinction inside one medium: same shelves, older readers, fewer restraints. Compare the boys' category of shonen.
