Web fiction
Slash fiction
A genre of fan fiction focused on romantic or sexual relationships between fictional characters of the same sex, named for the slash in Kirk/Spock.
Slash fiction is "a genre of fan fiction that focuses on" romantic or sexual bonds "between fictional characters of the same sex." The name comes from the slash in the K/S notation for Kirk/Spock stories, set against the ampersand used for friendship fiction, and the genre traces to Star Trek fandom of the late 1960s and 1970s, its early stories largely written by women and shared through fanzines. The label has widened since: femslash names the female/female subgenre, and the slash between names now serves as "a shorthand label for a romantic relationship," the notation shipping culture runs on.
Because the characters belong to their rights holders, slash "cannot be commercially distributed due to copyright laws," though some creators tolerate or support it; Omegaverse, which began as Supernatural slash, did cross into commercially published original fiction. For web-fiction writers the genre is the historical root of romance-focused fan fiction and its tagging habits, and its original-publishing cousin is danmei.
