Slow burn

Slow burn is the romance pacing trope in which attraction builds gradually across the story so the payoff lands like an event.

Slow burn is a romance pacing trope: per Book Riot's essay on the form, the romantic attraction between characters builds "slowly over the course of a novel or series", so the payoff, the first kiss, the confession, the getting together, lands like an event rather than a beat. Book Riot locates the burn in four elements: deep characterization (readers must love each character individually or they will not wait), complicated relationships with credible reasons the couple cannot be together, unresolved tension carried by near-kisses, interrupted moments and pining, and The Moment, the payoff readers cheer for.

Writer's Digest's craft version adds the discipline: build tension through near-misses, let the little things (a brush of a finger, a look held too long) foreshadow what is coming, keep both leads visibly pining, and hold the distinction that saves the whole project, slow burn, not slow pace. The plot keeps moving on other conflicts while the romantic tension smolders.

For serial writers the trope is a tempo contract with the reader: patience is exchanged for a cathartic payoff, and the guaranteed happy ending mapped under HEA/HFN is what lets readers tolerate the wait. It composes with other tropes rather than replacing them; a slow-burn enemies to lovers spends its whole middle converting hostility into trust one installment at a time.
