Space western

A subgenre of science fiction that uses the themes, tropes and archetypes of Westerns in stories set in outer space.

Space Western is a subgenre of science fiction that uses the themes, tropes and archetypes of Westerns in stories that take place in outer space. The fusion can be subtle, frontier-style exploration inside space opera, or overt: actual cowboys in space with rayguns and robotic horses. The article separates it from the science fiction Western, which keeps the traditional frontier setting rather than moving to space. Westerns shaped early pulp SF, the subgenre absorbed a 1950s backlash (the derisive "Bat Durston" label), and it revived from the 1980s: Star Trek was pitched as a "Wagon Train to the stars", and Outland, Cowboy Bebop and Firefly anchor the modern shelf.

For writers, the genre works because the frontier is portable: sparse authority, immediate consequences and a drifting cast, the same skeleton as the Western, transplanted onto a colony world where the technology is window dressing.
