How to publish on Webnovel: Inkstone, rankings and Privilege

How to publish on Webnovel: the Inkstone portal, the original and translation tracks, Coins and Privilege, rankings, and what it does not publish.

Webnovel is the international platform of the Qidian ecosystem, and its own pages say so in their way: the Terms of Service name Cloudary Holdings Limited as the operator, and the author sign-in flow into its Inkstone portal carries the internal source label "qidianoversea". The Chinese platform this model grew from is covered in Chinese web fiction platforms; this guide is the international side, built only from Webnovel's own pages fetched for it, the help center, the Terms of Service, the Inkstone portal and the site's own navigation. Where those pages are silent, this guide says so instead of repeating forum rumor, because Webnovel's public documentation is thinner than its machinery.

Account and the Inkstone portal

Registration runs through Webnovel's account system: the Inkstone page offers sign-up alongside sign-in, and the Terms of Service set eligibility at thirteen years or older. Inkstone is the author portal, and its own pitch is one line: "Become the Next Top Writer with Inkstone." It sits behind sign-in. The public help center documents the reader side of the platform in detail and the posting flow not at all, so the work of setting up a book happens inside Inkstone after you have an account, and this guide will not describe screens it could not fetch.

Original works, translations, fan fiction

The platform's own homepage navigation splits its fiction three ways: Original Stories with genre categories (Eastern, Fantasy, Games and Urban, each category URL carrying the lead's gender), and a separate fan fiction section whose categories are Anime & Comics, Book & Literature, Celebrities, Movies, TV, Video Games and Others. Translation is not a separate section but a parallel track, and the help center's Power Ranking makes the structure explicit: it "can be split into a Translation Ranking, Original Ranking, as well as Male and Female lead Ranking". The same pages name the three roles money flows to: Coins, the site's currency, are spent "to support authors/translators/editors".

Monetization, only as Webnovel's own pages state it

  • Coins are the official digital currency; purchased Coins never expire, while bonus Coins earned through events do. Coins unlock paid chapters, buy gifts and purchase Privilege.
  • Privilege is Webnovel's native advance-chapter product, the platform-run cousin of the advance chapters pattern: a tiered purchase through which readers "receive advance chapters by purchasing Privilege" and "unlock stockpiled chapters". Privilege expires at the end of a calendar month, and when a book stops updating or ends, its remaining tiers wind down with it.
  • Gifts are Coins converted into visible rewards on a book, with special festival gifts; every coin spent on a book also earns the reader "Contribution" standing in that book's fan ranking.
  • Golden Tickets are paying-user votes, and the help center states what they buy a writer: works ranked by Golden Tickets "stand a better chance to get more recommendation opportunities".
  • WinWin Mission is the named author-side incentive: "Author releases every day. Rewards are given once the number of privilege chapter unlocked reaches the target", with rewards disbursed on the first of the following month, within up to seven working days.

What no page fetched here states: contract terms, revenue shares, signing bonuses, exclusivity conditions. Webnovel's public help center and Terms of Service do not document them. The Terms do set the baseline for everything you post: you retain copyright in your work, and you grant Webnovel a worldwide, non-exclusive license to host, display and distribute it through its services, with the right to sublicense to affiliates for that purpose; you must be the creator or owner or hold the necessary licenses, which is also the clause translations live under; and the platform states it does not permit copyright-infringing activity. Anything beyond that baseline is a private contract. Read it before signing, and treat any precise forum claim about Webnovel contract terms as unverified until you can trace it to the paper in front of you.

Rankings, and why the schedule is the strategy

Webnovel ranks books on seven named lists, each documented in the help center:

  • Power Ranking: Power Stones received (weekly, monthly, all-time).
  • Collection Ranking: readers who added the book to their library.
  • Trending Ranking: coins spent on the book, including unlockings and gifts.
  • Release Ranking: the number of words published, weekly and monthly.
  • Activity Ranking: comments.
  • Fandom Ranking: new fans gained.
  • Popular Ranking: new readers gained.

Read the fourth line again, because it is the platform telling you its economics: published words per week is itself a ranked metric. The thresholds are stated too: a work needs at least 15,000 words to reach the Overall ranking, and the New rankings take works released fewer than 30 days ago with at least 15,000 words. Reader votes run on a daily clock: Power Stones are allocated at 0:00 UTC+8 by user level, valid for one day, one account per person, with the platform analyzing top books "by using both programs and analysts" and reducing votes and banning accounts where prohibited behavior is found.

Put together, three of the seven rankings plus the WinWin Mission reward exactly one behavior: showing up on schedule with chapters of consistent length. The craft behind that is not Webnovel-specific (choosing a release schedule, how long should a web novel chapter be); the difference is that here the schedule feeds named, money-adjacent lists.

Webnovel and Qidian

For the Chinese platform this one grew out of: Qidian invented the split free/VIP paid chapter in October 2003, passed through Shanda's Cloudary into the China Literature (Yuewen) consolidation of 2015, and pays many of its writers through royalties and salaries tied to daily output. That history, with its sources and its contract warning, is in Chinese web fiction platforms. Webnovel internationalizes the same skeleton, free front chapters, paid chapters behind Coins, rankings as the discovery engine, on its own terms and with its own undocumented contract layer.

What Webnovel does not publish

No traffic figures, audience counts or author earnings appear on any page fetched for this guide, and no third-party estimate is quoted here. The writer-facing tag and category pickers live inside Inkstone behind sign-in; publicly, only the reader-facing categories are documented, and this guide invents nothing in between. Treat any number or contract term you cannot trace to Webnovel's own pages as exactly that: untraceable. What is verifiable is the shape: original and translation tracks ranked side by side, a reader economy of Coins, gifts and Privilege, and a ranking system that pays attention to whoever keeps publishing.
