Where to read manhwa and webtoons: a reader's guide to the platforms
WEBTOON, Tapas, Tappytoon and Lezhin Comics: what each manhwa and webtoon platform is strong at, how each one charges, and how to judge a title fast.

Korean comics went through the largest format change in comics history. After South Korea's late-1990s economic crisis, most print manhwa moved online in the early 2000s, and the webtoon, a word coined in August 2000, rebuilt the medium for the phone: vertical scroll, usually in color, one episode at a time. Naver's global WEBTOON service reportedly reached 55 million monthly users across 60 countries. Reading it is now a worldwide habit with several competing storefronts, and this guide maps them: what each platform is strong at, how each charges, and how to judge a title before committing. For the Chinese and Japanese corners of the same shelf, see manga vs manhwa vs manhua; for prose serials, the companion map is how to find web novels to read.
The map: what each platform is strong at
- WEBTOON is Naver's global service and the international face of the Korean webtoon industry, with the reach cited above: originals commissioned for the platform beside translated Korean titles, organized by genre and update cadence. If a webtoon has a fandom outside Korea, it is probably readable here.
- Tapas publishes comics and novels together, phone-first, with an app that rewards daily use: its front page advertises free episodes "every 3 hours" and free Ink, its gift currency. The featured genres run to Romance Fantasy, Action Fantasy and BL, alongside Tapas Originals and early-access sections, and it keeps its mature titles on the website only.
- Tappytoon brands itself "Comics & Novels | Official English": licensed Korean titles, character-chat extras, a VIP membership, and a "Time Till Free" lane where waiting readers unlock episodes without paying.
- Lezhin Comics works the premium end: romance, fantasy and BL, with every title listing its free sample episodes ("3 Eps free" and the like), a PLUS subscription that adds discounts and unlocks all mature content, and All-Ages Editions published beside the original cuts.
How they charge
Three patterns cover the field, and most readers end up using all three. Free-with-wait: Tapas runs timed free episodes and pays out gift Ink through the app, and Tappytoon's "Time Till Free" makes patience a currency. Free samples plus paid episodes: Lezhin's titles open with a few free episodes before the payment page. Subscription: Lezhin's PLUS tier and Tappytoon's VIP membership trade a monthly fee for discounts and access. WEBTOON's reach is documented above; its pricing mechanics are not itemized here, because its help pages were not fetched for this guide, so check the platform's own terms before budgeting.
Judging before you start
- Sample deliberately. Every platform's free episodes exist to sell the next one; read the free chapters of two or three titles rather than the first three chapters of one, because art consistency and pacing only show across episodes.
- Check the license. Tappytoon leads with "Official English" and Lezhin posts copyright warnings against reposting; official platforms pay the creators whose chapters circulate as pirated scans elsewhere.
- Mind the maturity gate. Each platform handles adult content differently: Lezhin locks it behind PLUS and publishes All-Ages Editions beside the originals; Tapas keeps its spicier cuts on the website only. Check before recommending a title to a younger reader.
- Completed or ongoing. Rankings and collections (Lezhin's Trending Now and New Releases, Tappytoon's Completed section) tell you whether a story is finished before you fall for episode twelve of a hiatus.
A reading system for a timer economy
Wait-timer platforms reward a daily habit the way serial platforms do: a little every day, and the timers work for you instead of against you. Follow ongoing titles and let the app's notifications carry the schedule; keep a private list of what you finished and what you abandoned at episode three, future-you is the heaviest user of that list; and note where you left a paid title, because sample episodes re-read faster than a re-purchase.
If this makes you want to write
The novel side of the same companies is the natural next step for a reader who wants longer stories: the Korean serial ecosystem and its wait-and-read mechanics are mapped in Korean web novel platforms, and the craft of running an episodic serial, which is structurally the same discipline a webtoon artist runs, starts with how to write a web novel and the web serial release schedule.
