Real person fiction

A genre of fan fiction featuring celebrities or other real people rather than fictional characters, raising ethical and legal questions of its own.

Real person fiction (RPF) is "a genre of writing fan fiction, but featuring celebrities or other real people." Its subjects are actors, athletes, musicians, historical figures, YouTubers and reality-show contestants, and its named subgenres include bandfic, popslash and actorfic; slash about real people goes by real person slash. The history runs from authorized celebrity fiction of the 1940s through 1970s Led Zeppelin fanzines written under pseudonyms to today's archives: FanFiction.Net dropped its RPF section in 2002, while Archive of Our Own hosts RPF categories.

The craft conversation around RPF is ethics rather than technique. Some writers view it as unethical; libel is a live concern, and real person slash raises questions of consent and objectification, so some communities ban it. It is considered a genre of fan fiction but "somewhat separate" from media-based fan fiction, and its romance wing shares vocabulary with slash fiction.
